Commissioned by Shangri La Construction for a permanent supportive housing project in Los Angeles, Overgrown is a large-scale mural project spanning four large walls and a ceiling of a multi-unit housing complex . This work was created to help transform the newly remodeled building into a place of dignity and hope. The mural features crumbling concrete surfaces that expose vivid scenes of nature appearing to reclaim the structure. From the exposed breaks emerge colorful wildflowers and lush greenery, with a hummingbird perched as the central figure of renewal and lightness. The contrast between the raw, distressed textures and the vibrant natural elements symbolizes healing, growth, and the unstoppable power of life.
Overgrown was part of an initiative to provide permanent housing for individuals overcoming homelessness, and the design intentionally mirrors that journey. The illusion of a fractured wall breaking open to reveal beauty serves as a metaphor for breaking cycles, rediscovering self-worth, and finding peace in a new chapter. The hummingbird, often associated with resilience and joy, offers a message of hope and transformation.
This mural is more than decorative, it’s an integral part of a space designed to uplift and empower its residents. Through detailed craftsmanship and immersive perspective, Overgrown brings nature, serenity, and visual storytelling into the heart of South LA. It’s a reminder that beauty can grow in even the harshest environments.
